Master Bedroom Re-organization

Guess it's time for me to check in! Sarah has been on the ball...me, not so much! My family has been sick, life is crazy, blah, blah, blah. I think it's the excuses that are the reason I'm in this disorganized and cluttered mess in the first place! So, this past weekend I decided to do some reorganization in our master bedroom. Part of the motivation is that we got a king-sized bed just before Christmas. My parents got us all new bedding and it looks so nice, but there were piles of clothes and other random junk that has been collected around the room.

This was the view of the problem area before:

I really disliked where the treadmill was, but I wasn't sure what else to do with it! I want it in my room so I can use it often, but it ends up becoming a junk trap! (How did it get so bad?!) I was sick of seeing all the piles and using my treadmill for a storage area. I need to be able to use the machine for it's purpose...not to store all the junk! So I started to sort...and sort...and sort!

I found that most of the stuff piled on there were maternity clothes. My daughter is 10 months old and our last baby, so I started to document the items using It's Deductible Online, which I love! It keeps track of your donations throughout the year, then imports directly into Turbo Tax when you're doing your taxes. It's great! I boxed them up and they're ready for Purple Heart to pick them up. Junk gone...check! In the process I found some "treasures" that were not donation worthy and ended up filling a huge black garbage bag!

I also wanted to figure out how to get our new TV higher, without mounting it on the wall. We had a TV stand in our room before that held our old box TV. It's not the fanciest piece of furniture, but it is tall! So I decided to haul out the old TV (which my husband reluctantly carried to the garage by himself...it was heavy!) and I decided to find a new purpose for this piece of furniture.
I moved the treadmill parallel to the wall by the windows, which left a space just the right size for the TV stand. I found two shelves inside the stand which I plan to use as shelves for some of my sweaters and sweatshirts that are too bulky for drawers. I just need to get the little pegs to hold up the shelves. Here is the view of the finished furniture placement.
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I like being able to turn the TV towards the treadmill for when I'm walking. And for some reason our room feels so much bigger! Maybe it's because you are not walking into that TV stand when you enter our room or maybe it's because there is a lot less junk all over! So I am counting this as a success!

My next project...finish the TV stand and post pictures! Stay tuned...! :)

Simple Tax Organizing for Small Businesses

As I noted on Monday, last week the ONLY thing I got done on my to-do list was gathering tax stuff. And truth be told, that is only because I had a meeting set up with my accountant on Thursday, and so it HAD to be done.

Let me start off by saying - I am not a tax expert in any way shape or form. I have these forms set up to help out my accountant who is the one who actually handles the taxes. BUT I do find that these 4 simple forms help tremendously to "keep the books" - and I can make a blank of them if anyone would like a copy.

And much like my home financial organizing system, I use google docs. (I have the form in excel though, so I can email it to anyone who wants it, and it can be opened up in google docs).

The four forms are:

1. Payments & Deductions (running tally)
2. Home Office Deductions
3. Bank Balance
4. Invoice Tracker

Working from home provides many challenges - uh - so I've heard. (My husband is the one who works from home, not me). Not the least of which is how to get any work done when there are two kids to take care of as well. But, for non personal challenges - how to keep the books when love of accounting is probably not the reason you set up a home business. (Unless you have a home accounting business. In which case, carry on - I'm sure your spreadsheets are much more complicated than mine!)

Using my tried & true method of mint.com to keep track of general expenses helps. We have a small business checking account and a specific credit card that is only used for business purposes. So when something hits one of these two accounts, I automatically update my sheet to include the expense. You wouldn't believe how much easier this is then tracking down a $12 ebay purchase 10 months later and trying to remember what it is.

When a payment comes through on either of these I note it in the "Payments & Deductions" sheet, and keep a running tally of the business that way.

The second sheet - the home office sheet - is for when you have a home office that is only for the use of your business. (The IRS has strict rules on what counts). Here I keep track of any monthly utilities, and the percentage used (square feet of office / square feet of house). Depending on your type of business, you may be able to deduct more. I also include some items like phone bills and internet, which I count at a higher usage (based on estimated percentage of usage for business / not business). Finally, it also has a miles tracker for you to input how many miles you drive each month, as well as an input for any tolls you pay. This automatically spits out a number as to what can be deducted at the end of the year. I usually just print off this sheet to hand directly to my accountant. If you have a business where you drive a lot, you may want to add an additional sheet with dates, locations, and miles to calculate for each month in case you get audited. We don't drive that much for the business, so its easy for us to remember.

The third sheet is just a basic bank balance. (Note - this is different than the deductions / payments tally because with the deductions & payments I count each individual item and what it was, whereas the bank balance will just show "credit card payment"). This one is pretty self explanatory, but works great as a double check when comparing with the actual bank balance.

Finally, I have an invoice tracker. Now, we have a much more sophisticated system for the invoices that allows for credit card payments, electronic billing, etc., however I keep a running tally just for my own purposes in this same sheet.

I hope this helps anyone who is running a small home business! How do you keep track of any of your business tax write-offs? Do you do a mad-dash at the end of the year, or have a system set up?

Weekly Roundup & to-do list - Week of Feb. 5th

We are a bunch of sickos at my house this week, so not much got done. But, first things first: Last Week's overview - What got done?

1. Pull together all paperwork to complete your taxes
2. ... uh.... oops

What didn't get done:

1. The donation station.
2. Toss junk in junk-drawer and organize
3. Clean under bed
4. Get rid of old medicine
5. Tackle the clean laundry pile

To be fair - I did just say "Tackle the clean laundry pile" not "completely put away the clean laundry pile" - so maybe I should count that. But mostly I spent the weekend moping around complaining about my ear infection (seriously! I'm 31!) and wiping both kids constantly-running noses.

But time marches on, so I am doubling down this week - meaning I will try and finish last week's to-do list, as well as next weeks.

New to-do items for the week:
1. Go through 2 storage shelves
2. Declutter Candles
3. Go through plastic wrap drawer (mine is right by my junk drawer so this ties in nicely with last week's project)
4. Keep only good sharp knives
5. Go through one kitchen drawer - clean & organize

Carry-over from last week:
1. The donation station
2. Toss junk in junk-drawer and organize
3. Clean under bed
4. Get rid of old medicine
5. Tackle the clean laundry pile

Other items of note:

Anyone else doubling down for the week?

What do you do when you lose a week to sickness?

My housecleaning & chores are the equivalent of someone living paycheck to paycheck. I live weekend to weekend just keeping up - when I lose a day it takes forever to get caught back up!

Thanks for looking!

Yay! Our financial organizing post was one of the most visited from the link party at organizeyourstuffnow.com last week! Thanks Everyone for checking us out!!!!

Organize and Decorate Everything

Master Bathroom - under the sink

This was a big one on the to-do list for last week! I tackled under the sink in the master bathroom. I have a tendency to stick shampoo that I tried out and decided I didn't like under the sink. or hair things that I don't use.

So this was my starting off point - Kind of a mess! (And for the record, no, I didn't decorate my bathroom in floral wallpaper and mint-green carpet. It came with the house. And the master bedroom / master bathroom are last in the line of things to change up and make "our own". In fact the only changes we've made so far, are taking down the snakeskin (!) wallpaper for what turned into the nursery, and painting over the pink with a two-tone grey for my husband's office. but those are stories for a different day.)

So yes. a mess. Step one - clear it out!!!! and toss everything that I don't use. There is no reason to hold on to 3 year old 1/2 used shampoo. If its that much of an emergency that I don't have shampoo I will raid the tiny hotel bottles I have stockpiled. (Ugh - I'm such a packrat). I filled an entire grocery bag with junk. Did I mention that I found two EMPTY glass spray bottles? (WTF me)

Then put it all back in in an organized fashion, and presto-chango. Now, I still have plans to add different contact paper (floral really isn't my thing) - But for the time being at least I feel happier when I open up the cabinet.

Step two - organize / pretty up the top. I'll get to that a different week. :)

Family Room TV - Progress

Let me tell you a story about a dinosaur. A big, silver 32" dinosaur that ate about 1/2 of my family-room, space wise.

Then, one day, it refused to turn on. Now, I'm of the mind that I don't need to buy a new TV when I have a perfectly good working tv at home. But that doesn't mean I wasn't just a little bit happy when it died.

So we got a new fancy TV. And it hung out in the same location as the old TV, still eating up 1/2 of my family room. For about 4 weeks. The clutter gods were loving it.

And yes, this is what my family room normally looks like. *sigh* 2 year olds. So finally - FINALLY - we mounted it on the wall.

But, uh, what to do with the cable box and dvd player? Yeah - I had no plan for that. So as you can see below, we precariously put them on top of a slightly-too-small shelf with the cords draped everywhere. Still not much better. Although, I did get some more floor space finally. And by moving the TV from that corner, we could put the chair there, allowing for a more "out of the way" location for the toys. The many many toys.

So FINALLY this weekend, I put together a cheap $20 bookshelf that is the perfect depth to fit on the hearth. It can corral the boxes, as well as provide some extra storage for other bits of clutter.

We are calling this "progress" because obviously there are plans to have a true cord management system installed, but for the time being all the cords are out of the way of kids, and not easily accessible. And there is WAY more space.

You know the kicker? After having a neighbor help move the old dinosaur to the basement, Cedric decided to plug it in just to try it out. And it worked. Seriously. So now we have a tv in the basement play room.

And yes, I believe my TV pictures have shown you all the variety of programming we watch in our house - Yo Gabba Gabba, Sesame Street, and Wonderpets!

Weekly Roundup and To-Do list - January 30th

Last Week's overview - What got done?

1. Christmas Decorations are packed up and put in storage. Finally!
2. Master Bathroom - under cabinet area & drawers completed!
3. New Media Shelf and temporary cable management for the TV area
4. New TV area in the play-room (more on that later)

What didn't get done:

1. The donation station. again. I have ideas in my head, but have not managed to complete them yet. Currently I am just keeping a cardboard box by the front door as a "donation" box, and when whatever Charity it is that comes by and picks stuff up is going through my neighborhood, I put it on the porch. I do have plans though. They just aren't completely formulated or executed.

2. Laundry. The bane of my existence. It is all washed, but i have piles and piles of clean laundry waiting to be put away and folded.

1. Toss junk in junk-drawer and organize
2. Clean under bed
3. Get rid of old medicine
4. Pull together all paperwork to complete your taxes
5. Tackle the clean laundry pile

Carry-over from last week:
